Fluoroquinolones are some of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in the United States and are used to treat a variety of illnesses caused by bacterial infections  and new research suggests that people who use fluoroquinolone antibiotics may be twice as likely to develop severe nerve damage known as peripheral neuropathy.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics include the popularly prescribed levofloxacin (Levaquin), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), moxifloxacin (Avelox), norfloxacin (Noroxin), ofloxacin (Floxin), and gemifloxacin (Factive).
